Clearly, other factors may at least in part be responsible for the lack of variation, including: 1) very effective seed dispersal and the propensity for very long distance gene flow: 2) the European birches may have only recently evolved; 3) birch may have been severely restricted in its distribution some time during the last few glaciations. This could have been during a previous interglacial, perhaps warmer than the present one, where birch was lost from much of southern and central Europe and thus reducing the diversity.
